Description

Bobby Flay’s Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy takes this classic comfort food to a whole new level. Tender, juicy beef patties are paired with a rich, creamy mushroom gravy, creating a hearty and flavorful dish that’s perfect for dinner. Easy to prepare and full of comfort, this recipe is a true crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for searing)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms (button or cremini)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined (avoid overmixing). Shape into 4 equal patties about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Sear the Patties: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add sliced mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes, until browned.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over onions and mushrooms, stirring to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste. Slowly add beef broth while stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes until gravy thickens slightly.
  5. Finish the Gravy: Stir in heavy cream, season with salt and pepper, and let simmer for another 2-3 minutes to thicken further.
  6. Assemble the Dish: Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each patty. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing flavors to meld and steaks to warm through.
  7. Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley and serve immediately with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables.

Notes

  • Add Garlic: For more depth of flavor, sauté garlic along with the onions.
  • Use Ground Turkey or Chicken: Swap beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Swap Mushrooms: Experiment with shiitake, portobello, or a mix of mushrooms for a richer flavor.
  • Cheesy Version: Add shredded cheese on top of the Salisbury steaks before serving for a cheesy twist.
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free version.
