Description

Creamed peas are a classic, creamy side dish made with tender peas coated in a rich, buttery sauce. This easy 15-minute recipe is perfect for holidays, weeknight dinners, or potlucks. With just a few simple ingredients, creamed peas pair beautifully with roasted meats, mashed potatoes, or any comfort meal.

Ingredients

  • Peas: 2 cups (fresh, frozen, or canned)
  • Butter: 2 tbsp
  • Flour: 2 tbsp (all-purpose)
  • Milk or Heavy Cream: 1 cup
  • Seasoning: ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp black pepper, ½ tsp sugar (optional)
  • Extra Flavor (Optional): ½ tsp onion powder or garlic powder

Instructions

  • Cook the Peas:

    • If using frozen peas, boil or steam them for 2-3 minutes, then drain.
    • If using canned peas, drain them and set aside.
  • Make the Roux:

    • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute until smooth.
  • Add the Milk:

    • Slowly whisk in milk or heavy cream, stirring until thickened (about 3-4 minutes).
  • Season the Sauce:

    • Add salt, pepper, and sugar (if using).
    • Stir in onion or garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • Combine & Serve:

    • Add cooked peas to the creamy sauce and stir to coat.
    • Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

  • Adjust Consistency: If the sauce is too thick, add more milk and stir.
  • Make It Gluten-Free: Use cornstarch instead of flour (1 tbsp mixed with 2 tbsp cold milk).
  • Dairy-Free Option: Swap butter for plant-based butter and use almond or oat milk.
